The Six Chemicals Every Arizona Pool Owner Uses
Pool water chemistry is boiled down to six controllable variables: free chlorine (sanitizer), pH (acidity), total alkalinity (pH buffer), cyanuric acid (chlorine stabilizer against UV), calcium hardness (protects plaster and equipment), and — for salt-water systems — salinity. Each is adjusted with one or two chemicals, and each interacts with the others in predictable ways.
Chlorine — The AZ Pool’s Sanitizer
Free chlorine (FC) is the active sanitizer that kills bacteria, viruses, and algae. In an Arizona outdoor pool, chlorine burns off rapidly under UV — a summer pool with insufficient cyanuric acid can lose most of its chlorine in a single day. Target 3–5 ppm at all times; drop below 1 ppm and algae growth begins within 24 hours.
Three ways to add chlorine
- Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite, 12.5%) — the pool-supply pros’ choice. Adds chlorine fast, doesn’t affect CYA, slightly raises pH temporarily. Cheapest per ppm delivered. Dose: 10.6 fl oz per 10,000 gal raises FC by 1 ppm.
- Calcium hypochlorite (cal hypo, 65–75%) — dry granules. Adds chlorine plus calcium (helpful for fiberglass pools; excess in plaster pools). Higher pH impact. Dose: 2 oz per 10,000 gal raises FC by 1 ppm (65% product).
- Trichlor tablets (90%) — slow-dissolving pucks in a floater or feeder. Adds chlorine plus stabilizer (CYA) plus lowers pH. Convenient but adds CYA every day, which eventually creates “chlorine lock” if CYA climbs above 100 ppm. Dose: 1.5 oz per 10,000 gal raises FC by 1 ppm.
Most Arizona owners use a mix — a floater with trichlor tablets for baseline maintenance, plus liquid chlorine shots as needed to spike FC without adding more CYA. Per the CDC Healthy Swimming guidelines, FC should stay above 1 ppm at all times to prevent recreational water illness transmission.
pH — The Sanitizer Multiplier
pH controls how effective your chlorine actually is. At pH 7.5, about 50% of your free chlorine is in the sanitizing “hypochlorous acid” form (HOCl); at pH 8.0, only about 25% is. Same chlorine number on the test kit, half the killing power. Keep pH tight at 7.4–7.6 for maximum sanitizer efficiency and to protect plaster from etching (low pH) or scaling (high pH).
Lower pH with muriatic acid
Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid, 31.45%) is the standard tool. Dose: ~13 fl oz per 10,000 gal lowers pH from 8.0 to 7.5 (depends on alkalinity). Handle carefully — see safety section below. Pour slowly into the deep end with the pump running.
Raise pH with soda ash
Sodium carbonate (soda ash, Na₂CO₃) raises pH — and also boosts alkalinity slightly. Dose: 6 oz per 10,000 gal raises pH by ~0.2. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) raises alkalinity primarily but also nudges pH up slightly.
Total Alkalinity — The pH Buffer
Alkalinity (TA) is the water’s resistance to pH change. Low TA (under 80 ppm) means pH bounces around wildly with every chlorine addition. High TA (over 150 ppm) locks pH up and makes it hard to lower even with acid. Target 80–120 ppm — 100 ppm is the sweet spot for most Arizona pools.
Raise TA with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda): 1.4 lb per 10,000 gal raises TA by 10 ppm. Lower TA with muriatic acid using the standard “acid slug + aerate” method — same acid used for pH, but applied differently.
Cyanuric Acid — The Arizona-Critical Chemical
CYA (also called stabilizer or conditioner) is the single most-misunderstood pool chemical, and it matters more in Arizona than almost anywhere else in the U.S. CYA molecules bond weakly with free chlorine, protecting it from UV degradation. Without CYA, Arizona summer sun destroys 75–95% of your chlorine in an afternoon.
Target CYA: 30–50 ppm for a regular chlorine pool; 60–80 ppm for a salt water pool. Above 100 ppm, the CYA-chlorine bond becomes too strong and chlorine’s killing power drops — often called “chlorine lock.” Only way to lower CYA is partial drain-and-refill (there is no chemical remover in wide commercial use).
Dose: 13 oz cyanuric acid per 10,000 gal raises CYA by 10 ppm. Add via the skimmer or a sock in the skimmer basket — CYA is slow-dissolving. Trichlor tablets automatically add CYA (about 6 ppm CYA per 10 ppm FC added), which is why you must monitor CYA if you use tablets as your primary chlorine source.
Calcium Hardness — Protects Plaster and Equipment
Calcium hardness (CH) is the amount of dissolved calcium in the pool water. Low CH means the water is “hungry” and pulls calcium out of plaster, causing surface etching and premature resurfacing (see when to resurface). High CH causes scale on tile, heaters, and salt cells.
Target: 200–400 ppm for plaster pools; 150–250 ppm for fiberglass. In Phoenix, tap water already runs 200–300 ppm calcium, so most refills naturally push toward the target range. Dose to raise: 1.5 lb calcium chloride (77%) per 10,000 gal raises CH by 10 ppm. Lowering CH requires partial drain-and-refill with softer water (no practical chemical fix).

Safety Rules for Handling Pool Chemicals
- Never mix chemicals directly — especially chlorine + acid (releases toxic chlorine gas). Add one, wait at least 4 hours, then add the other.
- Always add acid to water, never water to acid — water added to acid causes violent exothermic reaction and splash.
- Wear eye protection and gloves when handling muriatic acid, cal hypo, and trichlor.
- Store separately — trichlor + cal hypo stored together can spontaneously ignite. Keep 3+ feet apart in a cool, dry, ventilated space.
- Run the pump when dosing — chemicals distribute evenly through circulation; localized high concentrations can bleach plaster or damage vinyl.
- Wait between chemicals — pH, TA, and chlorine adjustments should be spaced at least 4 hours apart, ideally overnight.
- Retest before swimming — verify FC is 1–5 ppm, pH 7.2–7.8, and any recent chemical additions have fully dispersed.
