Pool volume isn’t a trivia fact — it drives almost every operating decision you’ll ever make about the pool. Get it wrong by 20% and you’ll either underdose chemicals (algae, cloudy water, wasted product) or overdose them (skin irritation, damaged surfaces, potentially unsafe swim conditions).

Here are the specific decisions that depend on knowing your accurate gallon count:

  • Chlorine and shock dosing — chlorine tablets, liquid chlorine, and shock treatments are all measured in ounces per 10,000 gallons. Guess the volume and every dose is wrong.

Rectangle

The simplest shape. Multiply length × width × average depth × 7.48.

Example: A 30 × 15 ft rectangular pool with a 3.5 ft shallow end and 6 ft deep end. Average depth = (3.5 + 6) ÷ 2 = 4.75 ft. Volume = 30 × 15 × 4.75 × 7.48 = 15,990 gallons.

Oval

An oval is essentially a rectangle with rounded ends. Because the rounded ends remove corner volume, the multiplier drops from 7.48 to about 5.9.

Example: A 28 × 14 ft oval, avg depth 4.5 ft. Volume = 28 × 14 × 4.5 × 5.9 = 10,410 gallons.

Kidney

Kidney shapes are irregular, but the industry rule-of-thumb multiplier is about 7.0 (slightly less than a rectangle because of the concave curve on one side). Some sources use 6.7–7.0 depending on how pronounced the “bite” is.

Example: A 32 × 16 ft kidney pool, avg depth 5 ft. Volume = 32 × 16 × 5 × 7.0 = 17,920 gallons.

Round

For round pools, use diameter × diameter (D²) × average depth × 5.9. The 5.9 factor bakes in the π/4 area conversion.

How to Calculate Average Depth Correctly

The single most common calculation mistake homeowners make is guessing average depth instead of measuring it. Most Arizona pools slope from a shallow end to a deep end, and average depth = (shallow depth + deep depth) ÷ 2. Use the actual water depths measured against the tile line or pool light — not the pool spec sheet, which often shows structural depth (a few inches more).
